Bholu 12 preschool was designed for a small established community, Thakor Vas, located on the banks of the Sabarmati River (which runs down the centre of Ahmedabad city). The anganwadi was designed as part of an existing temple and community space, located within the heart of the community.
Bholu 12 was designed a simple rectangular space with store and amenities, with additional elements such as a window seat to give the feeling of different areas within the small room.
Throughout construction our volunteers physically worked on site, and closely with our favourite builder, Bakabhai, to refine the design while building and source materials. The children from the community brought energy to the project by helping with the painting and mosaics.
An emphasis on detailing, materiality and colour was used to give life to the simple, small space. A mosaic border of brightly coloured waste tiles surrounds the classroom interior, while touches of bright paint highlight particular elements in the space. A light blue ceiling makes reference to the sky and creates a feeling of spaciousness.
