Bholu 5
Completed February 2009
Bholu 5 is a smaller school, which was extended and adapted to an existing house. It is shared by the property owners, so the school room can be used for household activities after hours.
Designed by architect Leeanne Marshall, this school is an excellent example of simple interventions that make great changes. The outdoor area and wash area was extended and improve. High level ventilation grilles, new decorative windows (from local markets) and electricity and fans were added to create a breezy and light-filled room.
Bholu 5 is located in a friendly, leafy neighbourhood. The low level windows, painted in traditional orange, provide lovely views and a sense of spatiousness at a child’s scale. A group of 3 trees at the front of the building have been enclosed with a colourful seat to provide a shady place to sit for students and locals and a much-need shoe rack. On fine days, class is often conducted in the paved street outside the school under these lovely trees.
