Bholu 6
Completed March 2009
Bholu 6 School is a really great design with attention to detail and clever siting. Designed by Sydney architect Simon Hern, there are many simple architectural elements which make the design sustainable and delightful. Long simple windows with sun shades and ornate geometric patterns provide views to the street and excellent natural lighting. Gaps between the walls and roof combine with ceiling fans to create excellent cross ventilation. The rendered walls and carefully detailed stone floor also provide a cool interior space in the stifling dry-heat of Ahmedabad.
Bholu 6 is located on a corner site and has been orientated to address the street, while the low level fence and slightly elevated yard maintain a threshold and private area. This school captures the fine balance between a school as a public facility and the importance of a safe, peaceful place to learn.
To encourage visual learning, the interior was painted by a local artist with animals, objects, the alphabet and also gorgeous cartoons showing students cleaning teeth and washing hands to encourage good hygeine.
This Bholu was built by local builder Devgi-bhai and his team of masons and craftspeople.
