BUILD PRESCHOOLS IN INDIA!
The AWF Anganwadi Project in Ahmedabad India is now calling for volunteers for our 2010-2011 building season.
Volunteers will be designing and overseeing the construction of slum preschools, with a focus on recycled materials and community development. Volunteers should be graduate architects and preferably have site experience.
TO APPLY: Please go to our website www.anganwadiproject.com to find out more and fill out a volunteer application form . And also forward a recent CV to awf@bholu.com.
INFORMATION NIGHT: At 7pm on Wednesday 21 July at AJC office 79 Myrtle Street, Chippendale, volunteer Jillian Hopkins will be discussing the two preschools constructed in Ahmedabad in 2010. All welcome.
The Volunteer will be working closely with the NGO (Non- Government Organisation) Manav Sadhna in Ahmedabad, in the development and rebuilding/renovating of preschools in the Tekra Slum Community and in order to determine which pre school is the highest priority.
Many of the pre schools will need basic renovations such as new floors, windows, doors and ventilation and some will need a complete rebuild. The Volunteer will work with an AWF team to assess the sites, measure and document the existing pre-schools in the area, assess potential sites and sometimes provide sketch designs where required. Tasks can involve working with already documented plans to rebuild a new school (if land has been allocated), otherwise it will involve renovations to existing school premises.
The preschools are part of an Anganwadi Program run by Manav Sadhna which provides underprivileged slum children a daily nutritious meal, education and medical health check ups. Most of the Anganwadis are small, poorly lit and have little or no ventilation and are a simple room in private home. Many are in need of urgent attention, and even a small change can go a long way to help these children’s learning environment.
.As a Volunteer, you will be giving back so much to a community that needs your help. We commend you for taking the first step to being a part of our team. Your experience and legacy will pave the way for future teams and will help us to keep our work effective.
India is an incredible and life-changing place. The country and its people will embrace you with great warmth and hospitality. The satisfaction you will get from working with underprivileged communities who have nothing and want to give you everything will be overwhelming. And the differences, no matter how small, are something you will remember forever.
Graduate Architects with site experience need only apply. If you are interested in volunteering with our project please register with us.
